Zero Waste Republic

Zero Waste is both a movement and a 21st century philosophy. The goal is to repurpose resource life cycles ensuring that all products become zero waste products. In this life cycle, no trash is ever sent to incinerators or landfills. The focus of this process is to reuse items to ensure their life cycle never ends, or only ends once all use is taken out of the item. This exact process is used by nature. Every bit of organic material is used until there is nothing left. In 2014, it’s estimated that Ireland had some 2.73 metric tonnes of waste. Some 1.52Mt of that was household waste. With greater concerns over climate change, and a general spark in interest in eco-friendly lifestyles, the demand for zero waste products is on the rise.

Refuse

Say “No” to buying or receiving free items that contribute to landfill.

Reduce

Don’t over buy or over use. Where can I be more efficient with my resources?

Reuse

Using more reusable items like a travel mug over a paper cup(destination landfill).

Repurpose

Finding a new use for something instead of throwing it away.

Recycle

Recycling paper, glass, tin, plastic. Also turning food scraps and waste to compost.

What Are Zero Waste Products?

Conserving and recovering resources to help eliminate negative discharges into the environment is an important part of developing products according to this philosophy. Traditionally, products are designed to have short life cycles, push toxins into the environment, and are not compatible with a recycle based environment. The products we’re referring to do the opposite. They are designed with a long life cycle and are made without the use of harmful toxins and chemicals, thereby preventing negative discharges from entering the environment.

Zero waste in Ireland begins with shopping for and purchasing products that support that goal. Instead of being a threat to the earth, these products promote a healthier process from start to finish. They are designed to make zero waste in Ireland a reality. The result are products that contain their energy for far longer than traditional products, more local jobs, and a circular economy overall.
To create a world where products are sustainable, we must investigate zero waste philosophy on a more holistic level. The world will be a better place for it.
